Daniel O'Reilly (born 17 June 1984), also known as Dapper Laughs, is an English comedian, actor, film maker, social media content creator and men's mental heath advocate from Addlestone, Surrey.

Career

Daniel O'Reilly became Britain's first major Vine star, posting as Dapper Laughs he amassed over 600,000 followers with short clips focused on "lad culture," pick-up lines, and "banter". His first Vine was posted in July 2013. [1]

In 2014, he hosted the ITV2 dating show On the Pull. The show was cancelled after one series following intense public backlash and a petition with 60,000 signatures after footage emerged of him making a joke about rape during a live show. [2]

In 2014, prior to the show being cancelled O'Reilly released the single "Proper Moist" as Dapper Laughs.[3] The song entered the UK Singles Chart at number 15. Starting in 2014, Laughs began his Moist Tour of the UK. In July, he released "Take It To The Base".

Following a 2014 interview on Newsnight where he claimed to be "killing off" the Dapper Laughs persona, [4] he briefly retreated from the spotlight before returning to social media and stand-up comedy.

In 2018, he appeared on Celebrity Big Brother, using the platform to apologise for past mistakes and show a more personal side, proposing to his girlfriend during the show.[5]

From 2022, O’Reilly began a transition from social media and reality television into independent British cinema. His work primarily focuses on the British "geezer" crime-comedy subgenre. During this period, appearing in films like The Last Heist (2022), [6] Bermondsey Tales: Fall of the Roman Empire (2024) [7] and A Gangster's Kiss (2024). [8] O'Reilly also expanded into film production, with Hyprr Films with two films Kindling (2023) and No Way Up (2024). [9]

In August 2023 he launched Menace to Sobriety podcast [10] as a direct response to his personal struggles with substance abuse, mental health, and his ADHD diagnosis.

O'Reilly has candidly stated that he "needed the podcast" for his own well-being. Stating that the show functions as a tool for his own continued sobriety and mental health maintenance alongside his audience. [11]

In 2023 O'Reilly started the Men And Their Emotions (M.A.T.E.) Facebook Group page. The community experienced rapid growth and currently has over 45,000 members. [12] The group was formally registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) on 19 March 2024. [13]

Starting in 2023, Daniel O’Reilly’s return to stand-up comedy was marked by a transition away from his previous "Dapper Laughs" persona toward a more autobiographical and vulnerable performance style under his legal name. [14] In April 2023, he announced the "Out of Character" tour, which represented his first significant return to the stage in nearly a decade. [14] The production focused on themes including his public "cancellation," his personal experiences with sobriety and addiction, his ADHD diagnosis, and his life as a father. [15] The tour commenced in January 2024 and consisted of 60 dates throughout the United Kingdom all of which sold out. [16]

Following the commercial reception of his 2024 return, O’Reilly announced a second, more extensive follow-up tour titled "Let's Have It". Initially scheduled for 2025, the tour was expanded into 2026 due to high ticket demand, encompassing 70 dates. [16]

Controversies

Derogatory lyrics about homeless people

In November 2014, Laughs criticised the website UsVsTh3m on Twitter for what he viewed as an unfavourable review of his new album Proper Naughty Christmas. O'Reilly suggested that the review could hinder his goal of raising money for homelessness charity Shelter.[17] As a result of UsVsTh3m highlighting the lyrics of one of the album tracks as offensive to the homeless, the charity posted on their official Twitter feed that they would be refusing donations from O'Reilly.[17] O'Reilly later made an apology in a statement.[18]

Sexism and comments about rape

In September 2014, his TV show, entitled Dapper Laughs: On the Pull, began on ITV2, where he parodied a dating expert[19][20]

O'Reilly was heavily criticised in November 2014 when, soon after accusations that his show was degrading to women,[21] he joked that a female audience member was "gagging for a rape" at one of his live shows.[22] An online petition eventually gained 68,210 signatures with the hashtag #CancelDapper asked ITV to end the series.[23] On 10 November, ITV announced they were not renewing the series for a second season as a result.[2] A forthcoming Dapper Laughs tour was also cancelled.[23]

Retirement and return of Dapper Laughs character

On 11 November 2014, O'Reilly announced on Newsnight that his Dapper Laughs character had been indefinitely retired. When interviewed on the BBC programme, he claimed he did not realise the problems he had caused. O'Reilly also claimed that the media played a major role in the anger directed at him.[4] In December that year, O'Reilly resurrected the character.[24] On 25 December 2014, a YouTube and Facebook video was posted stating that O'Reilly's character Dapper Laughs would be making a return with the promise of toned down content. On 15 January 2015, he announced his "The Res'Erection" stand-up show.[25] On 8 March 2015 a pilot for a web-exclusive sitcom based on the character was uploaded to YouTube.[citation needed]

Glasgow gig cancellation

In March 2015 it was announced that Dapper Laughs was booked to appear on 2 April 2015 at Campus Glasgow, which describes itself as "Glasgow’s first frat house" (which are not generally a feature of British universities).[26] The event was described as a "live PA, meet & greet and photo opportunity".[26] After an online petition gathered more than 1,000 signatures in 24 hours the venue cancelled the booking, citing "too much negativity towards the act".[27]

Plagiarism

In June 2015 The Guardian reported that his website DappsDaily.com had plagiarised material from other websites.[28]

Big Brother appearance and criticism

In January 2018, O'Reilly entered the Celebrity Big Brother house as a housemate during its twenty-first series. He was the eighth housemate to be evicted.[citation needed]

The Telegraph writer Ed Power wrote an article called 'Should Dapper Laughs Even Be On National Television?' following O'Reilly's entry to the Big Brother house. Power labelled O'Reilly as a 'comedian whose best known accomplishment was torpedoing his career with a rape joke'.[29] Another Telegraph writer, Michael Hogan, wrote an article titled "If Dapper Laughs Wins, It's The Final Nail In The Coffin For Celebrity Big Brother". Hogan remarked that Dapper Laughs is 'not dapper, provides no laughs and isn't really a celebrity.'[30]

Boxing career

Laughs vs Simon

On 31 October 2023, it was announced that O'Reilly would face English TikToker Simple Simon on the preliminary card of MF & DAZN: X Series 011 at York Hall in London, England on 17 November.[31] On the night of the fight, O'Reilly defeated Simon via 1st round technical knockout.

Personal life

O'Reilly has three daughters and 1 son.[32][33] He proposed to his longtime girlfriend Shelley in January 2018, during his eviction interview on Celebrity Big Brother.[34]
